Project Overview
Surgery Partners, a leading operator of surgical facilities, sought to automate and streamline how administrators answer day-to-day inquiries about hospital data. Avahi delivered a secure, scalable, and highly automated Generative AI solution leveraging AWS services to process and respond to user questions in near real time. This modernized approach significantly reduces manual overhead, accelerates information retrieval, and enhances the end-user experience.
About the Customer
Surgery Partners is a prominent healthcare organization specializing in managing ambulatory surgical centers across the United States. Renowned for delivering high-quality patient care, the company continually invests in innovative solutions that enhance operational efficiency and patient experiences.
The Problem
Surgery Partners needed a better way to handle a growing volume of hospital administration queries. Relying on manual processes to retrieve the data was inefficient, prone to error, and ultimately slowed down day-to-day operations. If left unaddressed, these challenges would increase overhead costs and impede staff’s ability to deliver timely support to clinicians and administrators.
Why AWS
AWS was selected for its robust portfolio of cloud-native AI services and proven track record in secure, enterprise-grade deployments. By leveraging Amazon Bedrock, Amazon S3, AWS Lambda, and other core services, Surgery Partners gained a powerful, on-demand infrastructure capable of handling large-scale data processing. AWS also provides advanced AI and machine learning features that offered the flexibility and performance necessary for high-accuracy responses to hospital administration questions.
Why Surgery Partners Chose Avahi
Avahi’s deep expertise in architecting scalable AI solutions on AWS made it the ideal partner for this initiative. With a strong background in Generative AI and a premier-tier AWS partnership, Avahi could rapidly design and deploy a targeted platform that aligned to Surgery Partners’ goals. Avahi’s track record in delivering secure, compliant healthcare solutions further cemented its position as a trusted advisor throughout the project.
Solution
Avahi developed an end-to-end Generative AI environment designed to ingest, index, and respond to user queries on hospital administration data. Source documents were stored in Amazon S3, where AWS Lambda functions processed and indexed the data. Relevant text embeddings were generated via Amazon Bedrock, then stored in Chroma running on Amazon EC2 instances.
A hosted UI and an Amazon API Gateway provided convenient access to the question-and-answer functionality. When a query arrived, the system retrieved embeddings from Chroma, appended relevant context, and submitted the prompt to Amazon Bedrock. The response and key insights were then stored in Amazon RDS for future reference. Elastic Load Balancing and Auto Scaling ensured the application remained responsive during usage spikes, and integrated security features like AWS WAF and VPC controls maintained a secure environment.
