Driving Efficiency and Reducing Costs: Foresight’s Seamless Migration from GCP to AWS

Project Overview

Foresight, a diagnostics innovator, sought to modernize its cloud infrastructure to handle growing data volumes, optimize costs, and maintain stringent compliance. The company’s existing Google Cloud Platform (GCP) environment incurred high monthly costs and complex multi-project configurations. Avahi designed and implemented a comprehensive AWS-based solution that reduced monthly spend, streamlined data storage, and improved scalability. By leveraging AWS services such as Amazon ECS, Amazon RDS, and Amazon S3, Foresight now benefits from a cost-effective, secure, and highly available cloud infrastructure.

About the Customer

Foresight is a healthcare diagnostics organization that focuses on advanced clinical testing and research. Operating in a regulated environment, Foresight must manage massive data sets, ensure continuous uptime, and comply with strict security and privacy standards.

The Problem

Foresight faced rising cloud costs and operational complexity due to siloed GCP projects, large-scale data storage needs, and manual processes for provisioning and deployment. With over two petabytes of data, GCP egress fees and the sheer complexity of migrating workloads were major concerns. The existing infrastructure also required high availability for critical databases, containers, and batch workloads—an essential requirement for clinical workflows. Left unaddressed, these inefficiencies would have driven up costs, slowed innovation, and risked compliance shortfalls.

Why AWS

AWS provided a mature, cost-effective platform with robust services tailored to high-performance healthcare workloads. Its global infrastructure and native tools—such as Amazon S3 for flexible storage and Amazon ECS for container orchestration—aligned perfectly with Foresight’s requirements. By leveraging AWS’s wide array of services, Foresight gained a comprehensive set of security, monitoring, and compliance capabilities that simplified managing a regulated environment at scale.

Why RoboArt Labs Chose Avahi

Foresight selected Avahi for its proven expertise in complex cloud migrations and its Premier Tier partner status with AWS. Avahi’s team demonstrated deep knowledge of healthcare compliance, cost optimization, and secure infrastructure design—critical for Foresight’s business. Throughout the engagement, Avahi offered both strategic guidance and hands-on engineering, ensuring every aspect of the migration was meticulously planned and executed. Foresight valued Avahi’s collaborative approach and ability to provide a tailored, end-to-end solution.

Solution

Avahi conducted a thorough discovery and assessment of Foresight’s GCP footprint, including containerized workloads on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and Cloud Run, Cloud SQL databases, and over two petabytes of data stored in various GCP buckets. To reduce complexity and cost, Avahi designed a multiaccount AWS architecture using AWS Organizations, with a shared services VPC housing Fortinet firewall appliances and AWS Transit Gateway for centralized networking.

Key workloads were containerized in Amazon ECS, backed by Amazon ECR for container images. Databases were migrated from Cloud SQL to Amazon RDS (PostgreSQL and MySQL equivalents), while caching layers transitioned to Amazon ElastiCache for Redis. Avahi employed AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) to ensure a smooth, low-downtime migration for critical data.

On the storage front, Avahi introduced Amazon S3 with lifecycle policies, moving frequently accessed data to S3 Standard and archiving older datasets to S3 Glacier tiers. This structure cut monthly spend and simplified retention policies. Meanwhile, AWS DataSync facilitated a bulk data transfer from GCP, avoiding unnecessary downtime.

Infrastructure as Code was standardized using Terraform, allowing for version-controlled deployments and consistent environments. Monitoring and logging were handled via Amazon CloudWatch, AWS X-Ray, and Amazon GuardDuty, improving visibility and proactive alerting across all workloads.

Key Deliverables

  • Multi-account AWS environment with shared services VPC and Transit Gateway
  • Fortinet firewall integration for secure, centralized ingress and egress
  • Container orchestration on Amazon ECS with Amazon ECR for image management
  • Database migration from Cloud SQL to Amazon RDS and Amazon ElastiCache
  • Data transfer from GCP buckets to Amazon S3 (Standard and Glacier tiers)
  • Infrastructure as Code using Terraform for repeatable deployments
  • Comprehensive observability with Amazon CloudWatch and AWS X Ray
  • Knowledge transfer, documentation, and hypercare support post-migration

Project Impact

Foresight’s new AWS environment meets strict uptime and security requirements while reducing monthly cloud spend. By consolidating data and leveraging S3 lifecycle policies, Foresight lowered storage costs without sacrificing performance. The streamlined AWS architecture also simplifies compliance and accelerates time-to-market for new diagnostics services.

Metrics:

  • 9–10% estimated reduction in monthly cloud costs
  • Up to 15% additional savings with deeper resource and storage optimizations
  • High availability SLAs met (99.99% for critical databases and 99.9% for application workloads)
  • Seamless transfer of up to 2+ PB of data using AWS DataSync and S3 lifecycle management
